Case Study - Adult Swimming Lessons
At 74 years old, Sylvia is living proof that it's never too late to take up swimming. Although she first began lessons in 1971, it wasn't until much later, in September 2021, that they truly committed to improving their swimming abilities.
Initially taking lessons just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, they faced delays that extended their journey, but persistence has paid off.
One of the most rewarding aspects of swimming lessons at Go Gateshead Leisure Centres is the strong sense of community. For Sylvia, the camaraderie among classmates has been invaluable. Sylvia said: "The best thing is being with like-minded people, all starting from scratch."
The support not only from fellow swimmers but also from instructors, including Sarah, Paul, and now Claire, who has been instrumental in pushing Sylvia to achieve her goals.
The sense of belonging at Dunston Leisure Centre has been essential in keeping her motivated. With classmates who share similar experiences and challenges, the lessons feel less intimidating and more like a shared journey toward improvement.
When asked about the benefits of swimming, Sylvia emphasises the physical fitness as the primary advantage. In January 2024, she reached the 100 metre swimming milestone, a moment that she proudly displays at home! However, achieving this goal wasn't without its struggles.
After a painful wrist injury in April 2024, Sylvia was out of the water for several months, which delayed her progress and caused feelings of frustration. Yet, despite the setback, she found the strength to return to the pool in July 2024. Slowly, she resumed her practice, working on breaststroke for half a length and backstroke for full lengths. Progress may have been slow, but each small achievement has been a testament to her resilience.
Instructor Claire continues to motivate Sylvia to swim full lengths of breaststroke, and the goal of mastering new techniques keeps her excited for the future. The constant encouragement from instructors and the goal of personal progress have kept the fire burning, even on the toughest days.
For those looking to sign up to adult swimming lessons, Sylvia says: "Give it a go! The key is to build confidence over time and not to be disheartened by setbacks. Everyone has their own pace, and swimming, like any skill, improves gradually with persistence. Many times I've felt like giving up, even lately."
Sylvia's story is a powerful reminder that no matter your age or experience level, swimming is a skill that can be learned and mastered at any stage of life.
